Unique Applications

At first sight, the Linux desktop may appear to have more similarities than differences with, for example, Windows. However, despite these superficial similarities, Linux has many features unique to itself. It also boasts many unique applets, which are application and utilities only available with Linux. Most, if not all, of these applications have been written by independent programmers and released under the GNU Public License. Installs can be done by any of a number of means . The most common currently is from a CD or DVD into an optical drive that can read it. For example if the install is larger one – then a dvd rather than CDRom might be used. DVD readers and burners can read both CDs and DVDs wheras the converse is not true. A Cd reader or burner can not read a DVD .

CDs hold 640 mb of capacity. This is equivalent to 640 old 1 mb capacity floppy discs. A DVD generally holds approx 4.4 gb ( 1000 mb ) of data. A DVD holds the equivalent data of almost 7 (seven ) CDs. It used to be that CDS were run of the mill and blank DVDs were a lot more expensive – both the blank and by equivalent capacity. However this is not the case now. A blank DVD is approx the cost of a CD. However DVDs are less durable and more easily scratch able. One little scratch on a DVD can mean a whole wasted exercise of doing the Linux install. Worse than that the failure from the media install disc can happen right at the end of the process – having you scratch your head at the wasted time.

CDs are more durable. However in the summer time just a little bit of deposited dirt or grime can cause the same Linux OS install failure as that of the DVD. The answer – simply wipe the CD clean with water – a bit of soap if necessary. Wash the CD clearly – especially the downwards side which is the side which gets read by the optical drive reader. Most important dry both sides of the media – but with a very soft towel or even sock. Do not use a paper towel or tissue. This may scratch the install media.

It does not matter what install system created the partitions – DOS with a Windows 98 startup disk , Windows XP 2000  , 98, 95 or XP or even Windows 7 or a Linux install setup.  Its all the same for drive partitioning – all that matters is that the partitions are in place as well as being large enough.

For all intensive purposes  Linux can be most hard and laden with jargon ?   Who is all this jargon for other than to intimidate other stupid people .  Among the dumbest of people the worst sin in the world is to admit that you are wrong or do not know.  Better , or the ultimate mistake is to admit that you do not know.  Instead pretend like you do .

It’s akin to people who come from deranged or most dysfunctional backgrounds and families.  In prison or at the anger management course they hear words drifting in and out of their consciousness -  “maturity “  “responsibility ” “fair treatment of other people ” etc etc etc.  The  amazing part is that although they can spout these words they have absolute no innate concepts of what the words mean in application.  The one purpose of these words is to intimidate others in their community – who associated these words and their terms , since these terms are associated in the minds of their friends , family and colleagues with authority figures and their powers.   Its not unlike spouting such terms as “F.B.I.”  or ” Corrections Canada”  .

The  purpose and purposes of jargon is indeed to explain what might be complex terms in a swoop.  This is exceptionally important in the case of emergencies.  If the sail boat is going over you do not have time to explain to your crew which and what parts of the boat they have to attend to.  Jargon or the nomenclature of the trade or sport makes this all rapid , fast and efficient.

So is it with computer Linux jargon.   There is a good reason for it.
